Ashtabula - David Frederick Guerine, 74, of Parrish Road died peacefully Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Ashtabula County Medical Center with his loving family at his side.
David was born on August 9, 1937 in Ashtabula, the son of Frank and Sadie (Diamond) Guerine whom he loved dearly. He was a proud alumnus of Edgewood High School and was very active in their Alumni Association. Dave loved to tell stories about his high school friends and their athletic endeavors. One of his personal favorites was when one of the sportswriters called him “the most underrated basketball player in the county”.
He graduated from Youngstown State University with a BA and later earned a Master’s Degree from YSU. He taught and coached various sports at Grand Valley, Streetsboro, Ledgemont and Fairport Harbor High Schools. He also served as Athletic Director at several schools. During his tenure as Girls’ Basketball Coach at Ledgemont, his team went undefeated, posting a 20-0 regular season record. He was also a referee for volleyball and basketball for many years. Dave enjoyed the game of golf and became quite proficient at the sport. He enjoyed his times at Village Green Golf Course with his golfing buddies. Being a season ticket holder to the Indians, he was thrilled when he was able to attend the Indians' Spring Training Camp in Arizona with his son, David, where he met his boyhood hero, Bob Feller. That was a trip he never wanted to forget - he told the story to his many friends and said it was one of the highlights of his life. Dave enjoyed visiting the casinos and tried his luck at Black Jack while at Presque Isle and Seneca Allegany Casinos. He was competitive when it came to playing board games and he did not like to lose at Scrabble or Cribbage, two of his favorites. He liked to listen to 50’s and 60's music and read Clive Cussler novels.
A wonderful Dad and Grandpa, he will be missed for his wit and wisdom, strength and courage, and love of his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Debra (Jeff Fedor) Guerini of Conneaut; his son, David Guerini of Aurora; grandchildren Cole and Allyson Tattrie and Alyssa, Krista and Trey Guerini; the mother of his children, Bonnie Hacker Guerine of Hartsgrove; brother, Morton (Diane) Guerine of Florida; his "Saturday Morning Breakfast Buddies," Jerry Peterson and Dale Corlew of Ashtabula; as well as many other special friends.
